Why Can’t Canadiens Win The Stanley Cup Anymore?

The last time was 1993.

The last time was the 1993 Montreal Canadiens, which seems insane to even type. Isn’t hockey potentially the biggest export of Canada?

This year, we are guaranteed to have a Canadian team in the Western Conference Finals, because the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers are facing in one Western Conference semifinal. So, that’s good. And if you believe Conor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers needs a legacy series, there would be no greater legacy than bringing a Cup back to Canada.

Here is 1993 to 2011 in terms of the championship round:

So, based on that, we had these appearances by Canadian teams from ’93 to ‘11:

  • 1994 Canucks (who should have won, but the Rangers’ story was magical)
  • 2004 Flames
  • 2006 Oilers
  • 2007 Senators
  • 2011 Canucks

Now here is 2012 to present:
