What’s All Downstream Of The “Older Dad” Trend?

A few potential repercussions.

I been chasing having a biological kid for over a decade now, so when I see trend lines about “older dads,” I smile and nod. Apparently, the over-50 dad set (upon first or second kid) is rising. It’s still not massive by any means; it’s like 1.3% of the fatherhood population, and the study is based on birth certificate data, which has limitations:

There was a belief forever that the only guys conceiving over 50 or 60 were executives looking to “create” something for their trophy wife, or guys like Robert De Niro. That’s still probably a good chunk of who has kids over 50, although Bill Burr did do a Netflix movie about older dads, so I guess it’s somewhere in the zeitgeist now. I watched that movie, but I could not tell you the plot.

So let’s take the 1.3% of fatherhood that’s over 50 and see if there are any trend lines we can figure out about it. We’ve already addressed the whole “older insurance executive + trophy wife who is 29 and wants kids.” That’s a trope, but I’m sure it makes up some of the…
