I assume you are caught up with the recent Sydney Sweeney mess, but if not, basically what happened is American Eagle did a campaign where they made a classic dad joke (“genes” / “jeans”) and put an attractive young blond woman in it, and chronically-online society spiraled out about “Women can’t be hot anymore?!?!?” and “eugenics” and the like. It is very tedious how many simplistic, dumb things need to become part of the larger culture war tapestry, but I think we’ve been there since about 2007. Maybe 2004, honestly. That was a big year for Facebook.

Most of the perceived “crazy” voices on a topic like this are thought to be left-leaning. Some of that is appearance-coded, like a woman with multi-colored hair will rant about how ads are becoming Hitler-esque, and you highly doubt this is a three-time Trump voter. Plus, there was thing years ago where Sweeney posted pictures from a family reunion and half the guys were MAGA. I think Sweeney has posted in support of some liberal causes, notably female reproductive rights (which, like, um, how is that a cause that belongs now to just one side?), but whatever, who cares what her politics…
