The Roe Repeal was sponsored by helplessness and a decline in purpose
First off, I think it’s probably important to realize that a repeal of Roe does not criminalize abortion, per se. Based on trigger laws, it bans it in 13 states, and that number will probably get to 23+ states relatively soon. It essentially turns abortion into a state issue, which allows for the convenient argument of “Well, drive to another state and get it!” Obviously this is much worse for underprivileged people, and/or minorities, and that’s awful — but it shouldn’t be surprising, per se. America has long been about getting your nut. It’s a society very much shaped by the desires of the affluent and the pursuit of convenience.
In the process of that pursuit of convenience, we obviously left a lot of people behind. There’s a notable decline in connection among Americans, on various partisan grounds and income grounds and a million other things (COVID being a big one), and you see this decline manifest in negative things like upticks in addiction, crime rising, and a generalized lack of purpose. We tend to turn all these things into left-right issues, because tribalism is fun for most of us, but more than that they’re just human issues. It’s fun to scream about how the GOP has no heart, or the libs have no brain (both of which may be increasingly true), but if you back the bus up a few steps, you can understand how all this…
