The origins of hate

Very complicated topic, but I’ll try to take at least a run at the edges on it.

Here’s a good post which contains various academic theories about the origins of hate, including some non-academic “hot take” theories as well. Most of the people quoted have written books, so if you go crazy about “elites” — dare I say if you have a hatred of them — that post might not ring out to you.

There’s a lot of decent stuff in the article. This is probably the best:

Follows up that paragraph with this:

Low fertility and high immigration, according to Coleman, “are significant because they are changing the composition of national populations and thereby the culture, physical appearance, social experiences and self-perceived identity of the inhabitants.”

If you are a person that generally follows trend lines and tries to think about the puck is headed as opposed to where the puck currently is, I think you know a lot of these narratives — fertility rates plus automation will change the world significantly more than COVID, but it’s uncomfortable to discuss fertility rates (believe me, I would know) and automation, and it’s much easier to scream about COVID…

I write about a lot of different topics, from work to masculinity to relationships and social dynamics, I.e. modern friendship. Pleasure to be here.
