To summarize: she let her 10 year-old son walk around in a small northern Georgia town, and she got arrested, essentially for endangering a child. She could face one year in prison, but because this case is now viral and I am sure the DA of that county (Fannin or Fanning, seen it spelled both ways) wants to silence the whole thing, I doubt she does a pen in the pen.
This went viral at the intersection of a few things, most notably woe-is-me concerns about parenting approaches, I.e. “We don’t let kids play outside anymore!” While that is largely true, I also do have friends that let their kids play outside and some who even call their kids “feral.” What happened really is that COVID scared some moms, and so now going outside = maybe other kids won’t be there. In that case, why not go scroll your tablet? (Your mom might be doing the same thing.) Plus, our entire media environment is designed to stoke fear and division in the name of eyeballs. That scares…
