Partisanship And Economic Vibes

They intersect.

Take a look at this:

Essentially, that’s saying that — per University of Michigan research — “(Consumer) Sentiment is now just 7 percent shy of the historical average since 1978.”

But everyone seems to think the economy is awful.

So, like, uh, what gives?

Reading that, I couldn’t help thinking about recent work by Ryan Cummings and Neale Mahoney in which they estimate the extent to which partisanship moves these numbers. Both sides of the aisle are more negative about the economy when the other party holds the White House, but the effect is much stronger for Republicans. Adjusting for this effect, they find, raises consumer sentiment by seven points, or around 10…
