Of Course Job Security Is Mostly Dead, But Its Demise Benefits A Bunch Of People (Good!)

Job security died a long time ago, and we’re still kinda writing articles about how it’s “hanging on.” It’s not. By some measure, I’d say the “Gold Watch Era” — retire with one company — died in probably 1986, if not sooner. There are still some long-termers at anyplace you land. Just yesterday, I met a guy who has been with McDonald’s corporate for 18 years. My wife works with a guy who has been at his job for 35 years. It happens, although it’s rare.

I would say the notion of “job security” died for a few different reasons. There are two sides to someone leaving a job or getting fired/laid off, and each side has obviously different reasons.
