Is The “Boy Mom” Stuff Becoming Toxic?

Not really, but some of the content around it is, yes.

We can establish a few things up top on this post, I think:

  • I am not a woman, hence not a mom.
  • I also don’t have children, hence not a “boy dad.”
  • As a result, maybe I am unqualified to have this discussion.
  • I will anyway.
  • Anyone that posts a lot about their children in a potential effort to monetize those children is a wee bit sociopathic, even if we’re afraid to say that out loud.

Alright, now we can get into it a bit more.

Anecdote 1: My ex-wife was the oldest of three. The order was girl, girl, boy. This was a Peruvian family. Apparently in Hispanic/Spanish families, boys are very valued; I didn’t actually know that until I got into the game with them. Well, the boy was this cat named Alonso, who for about 7–10 years I probably considered a close friend of mine, and who I now haven’t spoken to in seven years. Life is odd. Alonso, however, was the apple of this entire family’s eye. The middle sister infantilized him to an insane degree, always talking about when he was a baby. The mom would drag him into bed with her for naps. It was creepy to watch, often. I guess that’s my closest exposure to “boy mom”…

I write about a lot of different topics, from work to masculinity to relationships and social dynamics, I.e. modern friendship. Pleasure to be here.
