Indeed Constantly Reminds Us That America Loves The Sales Commission Job

“If you’re worth it, you’ll succeed here.”

One of the most privileged statements in American capitalism is the equivalent of “If I was successful doing this, anyone can be.” While there are elements of truth to that statement, it usually ignores all pre-existing privilege and advantages that the person stating it might have had. It over-values work ethic, when in fact American work ethic is often defined and construed around hours instead of being logical and efficient with your time, and there’s a direct line from “… anyone can do this…” to the Bootstraps Narrative. Executives testifying before Congress about why most of their employees make peanuts usually will say, “Well, any of those employees could one day hold my position.” While we all know this is a lie, the fact that it ** could ** be true is what drives the myth and the hope forward.
