I Wonder Why It’s This Memory First
Unpacking one thing two weeks after my dad passed away.
This one could go in lots of different directions for me, so let me give you the facts up front. Seems reasonable.
- My dad died two weeks ago today. In fact, literally at this moment two weeks ago, my mom was calling me from NYC to ask if I thought it was OK to start reducing his life-supporting services. Have you gotten that call? It’s an interesting one. You think you’re ready for it. You’re not really ready for it.
- Most of the last two weeks has been a mix of emotions and logistics and just trying to go one day at a time and live my own life as best I can.
- Memories creep in around the edges of daily tasks and transport (I talk to my dad when I bike now), and for some reason, I have this one sequence that comes up a lot. Here is that sequence.
May 2, 1992 (Saturday) — we went to Twins/Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Kirby Puckett, Don Mattingly, others were in this game. Rick Aguilera (c’mon, if you know baseball you know him) got the save for the Twins. At that game, on the scoreboard (there weren’t really “JumboTrons” in 1992), they advertised available tickets for Knicks-Pistons, Game 5, the next day at MSG. Playoff series! My dad raced over to a pay phone (!) and we called the MSG box…
