“I do what work for me, you do what work for you”

That’s a lyric from Mase’s “Feels So Good,” also seen here:

Reminds me vaguely of the same concept in 1985’s Teen Wolf, where Michael J. Fox’s friend Stiles surfs the van and says “You do your thing, and I’ll do mine.”

I think about these obscure pop culture moments in the context of work sometimes. Let’s consider these phrases again:

  • “You do your thing, and I’ll do mine.”
  • “I’ll do what work for me, you do what work for you.”

Neither of these concepts are normative in the least in most offices, where the argument is frequently centered on this magical idea that process, when done right, will drive scale, and scale, also when done right, will drive profit. So everyone needs to follow process, for the real reason that work is truly about
