Downtown Fort Worth Has Lost Any Sense Of “Vibe”

I used to really like that place. Now I … just dunno.

I moved to Fort Worth in July of 2014. About three years prior to that, while at a bed and breakfast in Florida, I asked a couple “Is Fort Worth a suburb of Dallas?” If I said that today, I’d behead myself on the spot. (Logistically challenging.)

When I first moved here, I had a job at this luxury travel consortium whose office overlooked Sundance Square, which is the central area of downtown. I worked at that job for about 17 months, then I got drilled out in layoffs. I myself sat in a cubicle — it’s now part of a WeWork, ha — but I regularly took calls in this conference room that overlooked Sundance. While I worked in that role, College Gameday came to Sundance Square twice. As a former ESPN employee, it was fascinating to watch that from above.

I lived about 4–5 miles away, along the Trinity River. But I spent a lot of time downtown. Admittedly this was largely at bars. In June of 2014, a month before I moved here, I came down to interview with that company. After the interviews were done, I hit a series of bars:

  • Flying Saucer
  • The Library
  • Durty Murphy’s
  • The Omni
