Collective creativity

I watched that TED Talk above last night before I went to bed, because I’m the type of person that apparently watches TED Talks before I go to bed. (Not sure what that says about me, honestly.) In reality, I didn’t watch it immediately before I went to bed — I watched the TED Talk above, then I watched the season finale of Girls. Season 4 of Girls had been a goddamn train wreck IMHO, but the finale was pretty good. That’s for another post.

If you watch the video above, Linda Hill is the speaker. She’s a professor at Harvard (vetted), and has a whole professional narrative around “Being The Boss” (even a website, naitch). She’s also written a book called Collective Genius.

Why does anything about creativity or collaboration matter?

This stuff is pretty fascinating to me. First of all, no matter how hard you try or how good you are at your job, it is impossible to really do your job without working with other people. No one really wants to collaborate at work by some measure, but that’s neither here nor there: you have to. We’ve been talking for decades about “brainstorming,” but that makes no sense at all.

So basically, if you want to succeed as a company, you need collaboration. But at the…
