18 Years Later, I Finally Got The Eff Off Of Facebook

Probably should have done this a long time ago.

I think I initially joined Facebook in an University of Houston computer lab in 2004. I believe an ex-girlfriend of mine invited me.

I actually took the app itself off my phone on Christmas Day 2015 after having a fight with my wife at our friends’ apartment in Queens. (We got divorced about 1.25 years later.) I haven’t had the app since.

I finally decided to delete the entire account earlier today. A couple of general reasons why, in case you’re considering it:

  1. It’s mostly all politics nowadays, and/or virtue-signaling about kids, vacations, your house, “winning,” etc. There are known and unknown triggers (see below) in all that, and really I don’t know how anyone is still discussing Trump these days.

2. When I went to delete it, I realized I had posted 8.2K times in my life. If all those posts took me a minute to post (most took way less, but still), that’s 8,200 minutes. That’s about six total days of my life…

I write about a lot of different topics, from work to masculinity to relationships and social dynamics, I.e. modern friendship. Pleasure to be here.
